Nvidia announces Redcode RAW SDK
Nvidia announces Redcode RAW SDK, which makes editing 8K videos possible with Red Digital Cinema.
Content manufacturers need very powerful systems to edit 8K videos. Nvidia, in collaboration with RED Digital Cinema, announced a project aimed at finding a solution to this problem.
The REDCODE RAW software development kit, which uses Nvidia CUDA acceleration, was introduced at the event. Thanks to this kit, software developers and studios get a powerful new method to work with 8K videos.
RED Digital Cinema manager Jarred Land, together with this project, aimed to offer cinematic-level images and performance to content producers all over the world. High-resolution image quality and video processing make everyone accessible to the project.
Consumers are buying 4K television for millions and publishers like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon offer content in this format. 8K entered the market this year and 100,000 8K television was put on sale. In 2022, it is estimated that around 6 million 8K televisions will be sold.
8K, 4K offers more flexible editing for video editors than post-production. With high resolution, content manufacturers can pinpoint, zoom in and cut out the best parts of their record.
When the resolution of the 8K video is reduced to 4K, the defects, image noise is reduced and high-quality visuals appear. The 8K video has four times the size of the 4K video.
8K content editing requires a high amount of processing power or equipment manufactured for this purpose, such as the RED ROCKET-X. So many content producers cannot work at these standards. However, the situation is changing with this project.
Earlier this year, Nvidia and RED announced that it was launching a 8K video processing process using a single Nvidia GPU. Earlier this month, the Nvidia Quadro RTX 6000 GPU and the single-CPU HP Z4 workstation showed that the raw 8K recording can be edited in real time on 24 frames per second. This eliminates the need for hardware such as RED ROCKET-X or expensive dual-processor workstations.
This 8K video performance can also be used for Nvidia Titan RTX or GeForce RTX 2080 Ti graphics cards. Thus, the regulators will be able to choose the appropriate tools for their budget. This acceleration is not limited to 8K videos only. The software development kit can be used in many legacy GeForce, Titan and Quadro desktop and laptop GPUs. In addition, 4K, 5K, 6K can be used in video editing.
Leading 8K content producers, filmmakers and content producers like Colorfront are quite satisfied with this development. With new developments, high-resolution raw video processing, real-time effects, and fast execution are now available without being possible before.
RED R3D software development kit and REDCINE-X PRO software will be released at the end of the first quarter of 2019. Beta versions of the development kit were introduced to third-party companies to improve compliance.
