4K vs 8K

4K and 8K Compared
We compared 4K and 8K with all the pros and cons. Is there really any point in pouring money into 8K now?

4K and 8K Compared
It may not be very pleasing to buy a new television with the money you have accumulated for a long time and to hear that the next generation of television is announced soon after. This is true for 4K and 8K TVs . How important is the difference between the two?

In order to see the difference between 4K and 8K TVs, we did a little test with Samsung’s Q9F 4K QLED TV last year and the new Q900R 8K QLED TV.

Let’s start with, if you don’t live in Japan , you probably won’t encounter natural 8K content in the near future. While there are some 8K videos on YouTube, YouTube’s TV app doesn’t go over 4K right now and probably won’t come back until 8K is getting more popular.

However, the time we spent with the Samsung Q900R 8K QLED TV showed that the absence of natural 8K content is not so important. The upscaling technology, which extends the lower resolution to 8K, seems to be the determinant of the 8K era. Considering that even the most expensive productions of Hollywood today are completed in 2K resolution, it is unrealistic to expect the natural 8K to come soon.

Instead, TV manufacturers need to focus on how they can better display the current content on the 8K display, and Samsung does exactly that. Samsung’s television, artificial intelligence-supported Quantum Processor 4K content (even 1080p) by enlarging, almost invisible details are added.

While we were watching Aquaman, we were surprised by the additional details on Jason Momoa’s face and beard and the fact that the beards and pores were easier to see at 8K. In Pacific Rim: Uprising, we also found that water, fire and smoke look more detailed.

The difference between the 4K and 8K televisions is not very large, but when you look carefully you can see the difference.

SD Content Difficult to Improve
However, it is important to remember that television broadcasts are still far behind, broadcasting at 480p and 1080p. We clearly saw that the low quality image did not improve with upscale. Nevertheless, the Q900R 8K TV’s artificial intelligence processor makes some improvements to the low-resolution picture, and especially the text becomes more readable.

Get Today

” To guarantee the future ” or ” future compatibility ” frequently heard sentence when called from the new television technology. You can hear these words especially for 8K. However, it is not an easy task to predict which side of TV technology will be directed in the near future.

For example, the first purchasers of 4K TVs were also thought to ” guarantee the future “, but most first-generation 4K TV owners didn’t know that HDR10 and Dolby Vision integration was about to come out. So those who acted early were deprived of these abilities.

Samsung’s Q900R 8K QLED TV is one of the best TVs we’ve ever seen, but last year’s Q9F 4K QLED TV isn’t bad. If you are going to switch to 8K Full UHD, our suggestion is to do it for upscaling functions and not to get 8K TV hoping ” 8K content will be available soon “.
